What is apple splitting?

Apple splitting or apple cracking occurs when the trees go through a period of drought and then suddenly receive water. This causes rapid expansion of the fruit, causing the skin to crack. The split may heal over with a rough, corky covering, but it may also rot.

How to treat apple splitting

Apple splitting can be prevented by ensuring that the trees have enough water during spring and summer. The use of mulch placed around the trunk helps maintain water levels in the soil. But in dry weather, water your trees regularly, at least one full watering can per tree twice a week.
