Spartan is a fairly late dessert apple, deep red in colour, and of good quality, best before Christmas. It originated from Canada, developed at the Canadian Apple Research Station, Summerland, British Columbia, in 1926. One of its parents is the North American variety McIntosh, of which it shares its bright red skin and very white flesh. The tree is sensitive to canker, but it is easy to grow, and makes a very upright tree.
